Malayalam Film Industry
Malayalam cinema is a segment of Indian cinema in the Malayalam language which is widely spoken in the state of Kerala. Over the years, outstanding directors like Adoor Gopalakrishnan, G. Aravindan, M. T. Vasudevan Nair and Shaji N. Karun won acclaim for their films at various international film festivals, taking Malayalam cinema to new heights. It has been among the frontrunners at the annual national film awards for many decades now.
Kerala has got a rich and cultural background and its films are also unique in various aspects. Vigathakumaran was the first Malayalam movie which was a silent film. It was produced and directed by J. C. Daniel and was released in 1928.
In my opinion, Malayalam movies are known for it’s realistic direction and relatable stories. They do not add anything extra or any unnecessary elements, and show the reality as it is. Malayalam films are appreciated for it’s natural take/authentic approach and hence connect more with the audience. There are many versatile and talented actors in the Malayalam industry out of which most of them have been acting from a very long time. The industry is rooted to it’s culture and it has some of the finest writers of the country. The movies are presented wonderfully, they are shot in actual locations that makes it more authentic.
Many of Malayalam movies have been remade in Hindi and other languages, that have gotten greater attention than the original releases. For example- Manichitrathazhu was remade into Bhool Bhulayya in Hindi, Malayalam movie Bodyguard was remade in Hindi with the same name, Malayalam movie Drishyam was remade in Hindi, Ramji Rao Speaking was remade into Hera Pheri in hindi, etc..
The Malayalam film Industry release some of the best movies of Indian cinema but do not get much recognition from the audience and are very underrated. In this industry talent is more valued and appreciated than anything else. Music in the films are beautifully composed and are perfectly fit into the scenes. Malayalam cinema values story, plot and cinematography rather than stars, hence the star culture is quite less in Malayalam movies compared to other industries.
In the recent time, The Malayalam movie 2018, directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, has been selected as India’s official entry for Oscars 2024.
